FAQ

All you need to know

  • What is Myofunctional Therapy?
Myofunctional Therapy is a specialized treatment that focuses on the muscles and functions of the mouth and face. It involves a series of exercises designed to improve breathing, chewing, swallowing, and speaking. By correcting improper habits and strengthening the muscles, Myofunctional Therapy can help address issues such as sleep apnea, snoring, TMJ disorders, and other related conditions. This therapy promotes overall oral health and well-being, contributing to better posture, facial aesthetics, and enhanced quality of life.
  • How do I know if I am a candidate?
You might be a candidate for Myofunctional Therapy if you experience any of the following: Difficulty breathing through your nose Frequent snoring or sleep apnea TMJ (temporomandibular joint) pain or disorders Speech difficulties Difficulty chewing or swallowing Orthodontic issues such as open bite, tongue thrust and ortho relapse Mouth breathing or improper tongue posture A consultation with a myofunctional therapist can help determine if this therapy is right for you. During the consultation, the therapist will evaluate your symptoms, oral habits, and overall health to create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.
  • Where can I read more on the topic?
International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM) - Provides comprehensive information and research on orofacial myology and myofunctional therapy. Myofunctional Therapy: An Overview - A detailed guide on the principles, benefits, and applications of myofunctional therapy. Canadian Society of Orofacial Myology (CSOM) - Provides comprehensive information and research on orofacial myology and myofunctional therapy in Canada.
  • Do you accept insurance?
We accept insurance; however, not all insurance plans cover myofunctional therapy. Every insurance plan is unique and may categorize OMT under preventative care, orthodontics, or OMT (as in the ODA fee guide). We strongly encourage you to check with your insurance provider to determine if your plan includes coverage for these treatments. Any uncovered fees may be claimed as a healthcare expense on your income tax. After your evaluation, we provide a predetermination and a letter of explanation, along with therapy receipts and claim forms, either electronically or manually, for you to submit to your insurance provider. Please note that we do not offer electronic submissions to insurance companies at this time.

Our therapy improves chewing and swallowing for better oral health and digestion.

Break Free: Eliminate Unwanted Oral Habits

We work with you through positive reinforcement and awareness building  to remove habits that affect optimal muscle patterns.

Some of the most common noxious oral habits are thumb/finger sucking, fingernail biting, pacifier use, tongue and lip sucking.

Comprehensive Care: Tongue Ties, TMJ, and Orthodontic Support

i (37).png

We treat both anterior and posterior tongue ties. We offer pre and post surgical support for anterior tongue tie releases to assist in enhancing tongue mobility and muscle control. Anterior tongue ties limit movement, while posterior ties can cause tension in the neck, face and jaw.

We also support orthodontic care and assist in relieving TMJ and facial pain as it relates to improper muscle habits to restore  comfort and function.
